Creative (but Cohesive) Collection Design for Metalsmiths & Jewelers

A five week online course wth Megan Auman.

Core & Explore: Online Jewelry Design Class

What sets successful, established jewelry brands apart from struggling, emerging designers? A robust yet cohesive collection of products that turns casual shoppers into adoring fans!

Think about any jewelry brand you love or aspire to be like. They didn't just slap six designs into an Etsy shop and turn that into a six figure business. Instead, they developed a fully fleshed out collection of jewelry - usually with a signature design element, hook, or core aesthetic to boot!

And while it may seem like it can take years (or even decades) to get to this stage in your business, in reality, what you actually need is a system to help you design and add new work to your line - while building a strong visual voice as a designer and creating an instantly recognizable brand!

Does this sound like you?

  • You know you want to add more piece to your line but you aren't sure where to start or the best way to flesh out your existing ideas.
  • Or perhaps you've got so many ideas swirling in your head, but you aren't sure which ones to focus on, or how to add new designs to your current collection while keeping things cohesive.
  • Maybe you want a system to make designing and adding new products to your line something that comes naturally. (Or that you can even do on demand!)
  • Or maybe you're just stuck in a rut and need some new ideas to give your creative juices (and your business) a kick in the butt!
  • And you want to design a collection that feels like you - not a carbon copy of someone else's brand!

If you answered yes to any of these, then I invite you to join me for my new online class, Core & Explore: Creative (but Cohesive) Collection Design for Metalsmiths & Jewelers!

Hi, I'm Megan Auman, designer, metalsmith, and educator!

Megan Auman - online jewelry design class

You may have seen my successful maker business classes on Creative Live, but long before I was teaching those, I was a college metalsmithing professor. Those years of experience teaching metalsmithing, design, and business, along with over a decade of running my own eponymous jewelry line, have given me a unique perspective on the creative challenges of designing new work while also growing a creative business!

In this new course, I'm putting together everything I know about design, jewelry, and business to help you develop creative but cohesive collections that are designed to sell!

In Core & Explore, you'll....

  • Identify the core elements of your jewelry line that give you your signature design aesthetic.
  • Apply those elements to a core "low hanging fruit" collection of jewelry and then expand that collection in a way that makes sense.
  • Learn to think in units so you can expand your core collection into a robust product line that hits a variety of price points.
  • Develop a strategy for releasing new products. (And retiring old collections that just don't serve your needs anymore!)
  • And so much more!

Best of all, you'll learn to develop these collections based on the jewelry and metalsmithing skills and equipment you already have!

This isn't a program designed to give you lofty ideas that you never put into practice! Instead, it's a hands on class where you'll take weekly exercises and challenges into your studio and use them to develop new collection ideas - that you can start launching and selling almost immediately!

As a student in Core & Explore, you'll get:

  • 5 weekly lessons, delivered live, so you can ask questions and get feedback directly from me. (Plus a group chat so you can interact with your fellow classmates.)
  • Recordings for each week's lessons (in case you can't make it live). Plus, you can rewatch whenever you need a creative jolt or revisit the process to create a new collection.
  • Weekly exercises and worksheets to help you put the concepts you're learning into practice in the studio.
  • The opportunity to submit questions in advance before each week's live lesson.
  • And the confidence to develop or expand your jewelry line in a way that feels creative AND cohesive!

Core & Explore features five modules, each designed to guide you through the process of developing your own distinctive product line.

In Module 1, you'll learn to identify the core of your designs to help you develop a signature aesthetic that's all your own. You'll learn to mine your personal experiences, interests, and aesthetic for ideas and how to fit those ideas to your current jewelry and metalsmithing skill set. In Module 2, you'll apply your core design identity to a variety of different jewelry types - and experiment with ways to broaden your core offering to expand your line. (Without seeming all over the place.)

In Module 3, you'll learn how to expand your designs even more (and how to increase your production efficiency) by designing and thinking in units. (We'll also discuss the most efficient ways to produce those units - whether you're looking to make everything yourself or outsource some of your production.)

In Module 4, you'll learn to assess your ideas (before and after they've hit the marketplace) to help keep your collection at just the right size. (Including how to know when it's time to retire a collection.)

In Module 5, you'll put it all together into a repeatable system you can use to design and launch new collections over and over again. (Including how often to launch new collections and what to do when you know you should launch a new collection and you're feeling stuck.)

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does it matter what part of the world I'm in?

Nope! You can take this class from anywhere as long as you have Internet access that allows you to stream data. I chose a time for the live lessons that should work fairly well if you’re in the US, Canada, or Australia (or if you’re a night owl in Europe) but all the lessons are recorded, so you can watch them at a time that’s convenient for you!

What do I need to access the lessons?

You will need a computer or mobile device with Internet. (While you can watch the lessons on your phone, I’d recommend a computer or tablet so you can see the content a little better!) All lessons are conducted via Crowdcast, which also has a mobile app you can use to access content.

How long will each lesson last?

Each lesson will last around 60-90 minutes, though they could go a little longer dependin on questions from the group. The max any lesson will go is 2 hours.

How long will I have access to the material?

You’ll have access to all the records and resources for a minimum of one year after the class wraps! (Perfect if you get a little behind or want to revisit the course material later.)

What happens if I can't make a class live?

No worries! I know sometimes life gets in the way or you have other commitments. (Or maybe you’re going on vacation - lucky you!) All the lessons will be recorded so you can watch at any time, and you’ll have the ability to submit questions in advance before each lesson.

Who is this class for?

This course is for jewelry designers and metalsmiths who currently sell their work or are looking to sell their work in the near future. You should have at least a few jewelry designs or finished metalsmithing projects to really take advantage of this class!

If you’re in the early stages of your business, you’ll benefit from learning how to think about your collections in a more strategic way. If you’ve been in business for a while, this class can help you get out of a creative rut. And if you’ve been making for a while but can’t quite seem to focus on one idea or body of work, this class will guide you into developing a more cohesive collection.

How much experience do I need in jewelry or metalsmithing to take this class?

You should have an understanding of basic jewelry making or metalsmithing skills and you should currently be designing or making some jewelry. (Even if it isn’t for sale.) The more skills you have, the more ways you’ll be able to flesh out a collection, but even basic skills are enough to get you started in this class!

Is this class only for jewelers and metalsmiths?

Yes. This class is focused specifically on designing jewelry. It does not cover general product design. But this class will work you if you are making jewelry out of other materials. (Like textiles, leather, ceramics, or alternative materials.)

Do you teach metalsmithing techniques in this class?

This is not a technical class. Instead, think of it more like a design bootcamp, designed to help you apply the skills you already have to create a distinctive but cohesive collection of jewelry.

I already have a degree (or two) in metalsmithing. Will this class help me?

Yes! Particularly if you’re trying to figure out how to take the more conceptual art jewelry you love to make and turning it into a viable (but still interesting) production line.

I’ve never had any formal training in metalsmithing. Can I still take this class?

Yep! This class can work for you if you’re self-taught or working in non-traditional jewelry materials. The design exercises are designed to meet you where you are at your current skill level.

I'm worried about other jewelry designers stealing my ideas. How much do I have to share in this class?

I understand that you may want to keep your design ideas private, especially in the early stages. That’s why you’re under no obligation to share your designs with me or any of the other students in the class. (And why there is no FB group or other group forum.) You can participate in the class completely anonymously if you prefer!

Of course, if you do want to share what you’re working on, you’ll be able to use the course hashtag on social media as well as submit questions before each call!

Will you be running this class again?

Yes, but not until 2020. This is the only time I’ll be running the class in 2019. So if this is something you’re interested in learning this year, I’d suggest enrolling for the class and archiving all the content so you can go through it at a time that’s convenient for you. (You'll have access to all the course content for at least one year, so there's no rush to get through it!)

How are payments handled?

You can pay securely using your credit card or PayPal. For the payment plan option, you must use a credit card.

If you are opting for the payment plan, your first payment will be charged immediately, the second one month later, and the third and final payment will be one month after that.

Have other questions? Still wondering if this class is right for you?

Feel free to shoot me an email at with your questions! I’m happy to answer them!

The bottom line is this:

You could spend years struggling to develop your ideas into a distinctive, cohesive collection on your own.

Or you could spend thousands of dollars taking jewelry classes at your local university or arts center. (Where you still might not learn how to create a collection that you can actually sell.)

Or, you can take Core & Explore and find a short cut to developing new collections and growing your brand - guided by an experienced teacher who's done it herself!
